Since the deadly attacks, Rebekah Gregory has gone through 18 grueling surgeries and lost half her leg in the process.
But 12 months on the 27-year-old has returned to the scene of the bombing, and collapsed over the finish line in joy as she finished the last few miles of the 2015 Boston Marathon – running on her prosthetic limb.
Holding the hand of her trainer, who is also an amputee, the Texas native broke down in tears as she reached the end, just yards away from the spot where she was standing when the deadly explosion hit.
From her hotel, before she took to the city streets, she posed for a picture in her running attire alongside the message: ‘This is the day….I take my life back.’
The symbolic gesture came during an emotionally-charged race which took place two weeks after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty of using weapons of mass destruction to kill three people and injured 264 others on April 15, 2013.
